Not only your school teachers require you to know how to write an essay. Another example of when you may need this skill is an English proficiency test. Such tests are not obligatory, but you can take them to have higher chances of entering college or university. We mean SAT, ACT, Michigan test, TOEFL, and IELTS. Each of these tests contains a writing section. Thus, every student has to have an idea of how to write an excellent essay to earn the highest score without running out of time.
Most of the articles discuss SAT and TOEFL, so we will explain how to write a good essay on the example of IELTS requirements. It is an International English Langauge Test System, so, as you may guess, it requires an excellent knowledge of this language.
First of all, mind that you have to analyze model answers to the questions on IELTS essay as far as there are several different types of essays with different formats respectively.
- Critical thinking
- Research paper (more information by the link)
Those are the general types of essays. In fact, all types of academic papers follow the same structure. It all depends on the writing style. For example, while MLA style does not require students to develop a separate title page and move directly to the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, in APA format, students also have to add a title page and an abstract.
General Rules of Writing IELTS Essay
Before we move to every essay’s section, let’s first discuss some useful tips and general rules you need to apply on the way to the highest possible score.
The information you provide depends on the type of your test essay. Specific examples of IELTS essay types include:
- Agree/disagree (support the point or deny it)
- Discuss several ideas
- Pros and cons
- Causes & Effects
- Problems and solutions to them
From time to time, applicants have to deal with mixed types. An example may be an essay where you need to discuss two ideas, and then provide advantages and disadvantages of each of them. In the end, you may tell which point you personally support.
If you read the essay question very carefully at least twice, most probably you will get the point. Another rule you need to follow before the exam date is practicing all the time using effective study materials.
Please keep in mind that you have no more than 40 minutes to complete your writing assignment. You should answer the main question as well as include valuable examples and relevant sources (if any). The length is usually up to 250 words so that you have more than enough time.
As any ordinary essay, IELTS paper has to include:

How to Work on Every Part of Your Essay
Dedicate some time to planning/developing an outline. It will make the writing process flow faster.
Introduction (First Paragraph)
Write a short introduction with the minimum of details.
- Show the main question or topic of the essay. Use some basic facts from the instructions or the piece you need to analyze.
- Explain what you will write about to your reader.
- Work on your most powerful point known as a thesis statement. A thesis statement goes in the last sentence of the first paragraph. Avoid having a question or citation as your thesis statement.
An Environment question may look this way:
Developed countries have led to many environmental problems globally, particularly in their contribution to global warming.
What can be done to avoid further pollution and minimize the dangers of global warming?
The first sentence of the instructions explains the topic with the help of facts and sometimes statistics. You need to write down a rewritten paragraph from the instructions to include it in your introduction. The second part of the instructions contains a specific question to answer. Sometimes, students do not need to share their personal ideas on the topic, but this example is an exception.
Body (3 Paragraphs)
Your body has to include the following elements:
- 3 Arguments to support your thesis
- Facts and statistics to use as your evidence
- In-text citations (both direct and indirect)
- Brief findings
IELTS can have 2-3 body paragraphs. The main point of each paragraph goes in the first sentence. Write the evidence in the rest of the sentences to support your argument and prove that you’re right.
An example would be an essay on the environmental issues which talks about how Peruvian people treat and defend their nature from the threats of the developed world. The first paragraphs of your essay’s body may look this way:
Unlike most nations who fight for the human rights during the elections campaign, Peruvian people care about the richness of their motherland. The Amazonian land is full of expensive resources such as oil, minerals, and gas. The aggressive policy of the President Alan Garcia who tries to extract these goods from the untouched indigenous place outrages Peruvian population. It seems like the President did not expect such reaction or any resistance at all as far as he was doing it to increase the wealth of his native land.
In this example, the main idea/argument is that the Peruvian nation values environment and its safety more than human life. The supporting sentence explains that they do not support the current candidate as he underestimates the value of local nature and resources.
Most of the essay will explain the negative effects of global warming and developed countries who wish to steal natural resources from the third-world countries instead of helping them.
The second body paragraph, however, must show the opposing view. It will point to the writer’s objectivity. The last, third body paragraph, should begin with the point you support. Try to change the opinion of your reader back to your initial idea.
The last paragraph needs up to 2-3 sentences, so don’t waste too much time on that. Try to conclude your IELTS essay in the following way:
- Restate your thesis statement from introduction
- Include some points or steps to be taken in the future to avoid the problems discussed in your essay
